The right pair of sunglasses does two jobs: it protects your eyes and it flatters your face. At Optoconsult we have been fitting frames since 1968, and the simplest rule we use is contrast. Pick a frame shape that is different from your face shape, and keep the frame roughly as wide as the widest part of your face.
Step 1: Find your face shape
Pull your hair back, look straight into a mirror and notice three things: the widest part of your face, the shape of your jawline, and whether your face is longer than it is wide.
- Round: soft curves, width and length about the same, rounded jaw.
- Square: strong, angular jaw, forehead and jaw about the same width.
- Oval: slightly longer than wide, gently rounded jaw, balanced proportions.
- Heart: wider forehead and cheekbones, narrower chin.
- Long (oblong): noticeably longer than wide, straight cheek line.
Step 2: Match the frame
Round face
Angular frames add definition. Square and rectangular styles such as the Wayfarer make a round face look sharper and slimmer. Avoid small, round frames, which repeat the curves.
Square face
Soften a strong jaw with rounder or curved frames. The teardrop shape of an Aviator or the gentle curve of a Pilot balances angular features well.
Oval face
Lucky you: almost every style works. Choose frames about as wide as your face. The Clubmaster, Wayfarer and Aviator all suit oval faces.
Heart-shaped face
Look for frames that are lighter on top or slightly wider at the bottom to balance a broader forehead. Aviators and thin metal frames are a great choice.
Long face
Deeper frames with a strong top line help shorten a long face. Browline styles like the Clubmaster and bold Wayfarers work well.
Step 3: Check the fit
- Your eyes should sit near the centre of the lenses.
- The frame should not press on your temples or slide down your nose.
- Your eyebrows should sit just above or along the top of the frame.
Do not forget eye protection
Style matters, but protection matters more. Strong sunlight in Pakistan can strain and damage your eyes over time, so wear sunglasses outdoors, especially while driving or near water and sand. Never look directly at the sun, even with sunglasses on.
